8" Wooden Hooked Climbers

These 8-inch Hooked Wooden Pole Climbers are designed for kplc linemen, who need to ascend timber utility poles for power line installation, maintenance, and repair. The 8-inch gaffs (spurs) (kadunga) penetrate the wood surface to provide a secure foothold, while the hooked design gives extra grip on the pole. Adjustable leather or nylon straps secure the climbers to the lineman’s boots and legs for a stable, comfortable fit during prolonged climbing. Made from hardened steel for durability and repeated use, they are a fundamental piece of equipment for any utility line crew working with wooden poles.

How They Work

1. ​Engagement: The climber kicks the gaff into the pole at a downward angle (approximately 30°).
2. ​Weight Distribution: The worker’s weight is supported by the gaff embedded in the wood, while a pole safety belt (or "buck squeeze") wraps around the pole to prevent the climber from falling backward.
3. ​The "Safety Flip": To move up, the climber shifts their weight, flips their safety strap upward, and takes a step, driving the next gaff into the pole.

​Safety Maintenance

• ​Gaff Sharpening: Gaffs must be kept sharp using a specialized file and checked with a gaff gauge to ensure they maintain the correct thickness and profile.
